Which Visa Do You Need?

International patients traveling to China for medical treatment typically need one of the following visa types:

S2 Visa (Short-Term Private Visit)

  • Purpose: Medical treatment, family visit, or other private matters
  • Duration: Up to 180 days (6 months)
  • Best for: Most medical travelers
  • Multiple entries: Available for repeat treatments

M Visa (Business/Commercial)

  • Purpose: Commercial activities, including medical consultations arranged through agencies
  • Duration: 30-90 days
  • Best for: Short diagnostic visits or initial consultations

Visa-Free Entry

Some nationalities may qualify for visa-free entry to China for short stays. As of 2026, citizens of many European countries can enter China visa-free for up to 15-30 days. Check the latest policy for your nationality, as this is subject to change.

Important: Even with visa-free entry, a hospital invitation letter is strongly recommended. It serves as proof of purpose at immigration and can help if you need to extend your stay.

Our team assists with every step of the visa application:

  2. Documentation review: We review all your documents before submission to ensure completeness and accuracy.

  3. Medical record preparation: We help organize and, if needed, translate your medical records into a format that Chinese hospitals and embassies accept.

  4. Embassy guidance: We provide specific instructions based on your nationality and the Chinese embassy/consulate serving your area.

Step-by-Step Application Process

Step 1: Contact ChinaMed Select (4-6 weeks before travel)

Reach out to our team with your medical records. We'll match you with the right hospital and specialist, and begin arranging your hospital appointment.

Step 2: Receive Hospital Invitation Letter (3-4 weeks before travel)

Once your appointment is confirmed, the hospital issues an official invitation letter. This letter includes your personal details, treatment plan, dates, and the hospital's official stamp.

Step 3: Gather Documents (2-3 weeks before travel)

Compile all required documents. Make copies of everything. Ensure your passport is valid and has blank pages.

Step 4: Submit Visa Application (2-3 weeks before travel)

Visit your local Chinese embassy or consulate, or use an authorized visa service center. Submit your application with all supporting documents.

Step 5: Receive Visa (1-2 weeks before travel)

Collect your passport with the visa. Verify all the details (name, dates, entry type) are correct.

Step 6: Prepare for Travel

  • Book flights and accommodation
  • Set up a VPN on your devices (many Western websites are blocked in China)
  • Download WeChat (essential for communication in China)
  • Inform your bank about your travel plans
  • Carry printed copies of all medical documents

Tips for a Smooth Process

Do's:

  • Apply well in advance — at least 3-4 weeks before travel
  • Provide complete and honest information
  • Keep all original documents and copies
  • Carry the hospital invitation letter during travel
  • Have emergency contact numbers ready

Don'ts:

  • Don't overstay your visa duration
  • Don't apply for a tourist visa if the purpose is medical — this can cause issues at immigration
  • Don't forget to check if your nationality qualifies for visa-free entry first

Extending Your Stay

If your treatment takes longer than expected, visa extensions are possible:

  • Apply at the local Public Security Bureau (PSB) at least 7 days before your current visa expires
  • You'll need: a letter from the hospital explaining the need for extended treatment, current visa, passport, and accommodation registration
  • Extensions are typically granted for medical reasons with proper documentation
