What Is CAR-T Cell Therapy?

CAR-T (Chimeric Antigen Receptor T-cell) therapy is a groundbreaking form of immunotherapy that reprograms a patient's own immune cells to recognize and destroy cancer cells. Unlike traditional chemotherapy, which attacks all rapidly dividing cells, CAR-T therapy targets specific proteins on cancer cell surfaces, making it highly precise and effective.

The treatment involves collecting T-cells from the patient's blood, genetically engineering them in a laboratory to produce chimeric antigen receptors, and then infusing them back into the patient. These modified cells can then identify and eliminate cancer cells throughout the body.

Why Consider CAR-T Therapy in China?

China has emerged as a global leader in CAR-T therapy, with several key advantages for international patients:

  • Cost savings of 50-70%: CAR-T therapy in China typically costs ¥200,000-500,000 ($28,000-$70,000), compared to $373,000-$475,000 in the United States and €250,000-€350,000 in Europe.
  • Multiple approved products: China has approved several CAR-T products including Yescarta (axicabtagene ciloleucel) and Relma-cel, with more in clinical trials.
  • Extensive clinical experience: Chinese hospitals have treated thousands of patients with CAR-T therapy, building deep expertise in managing treatment and side effects.
  • Shorter wait times: While patients in Europe may wait months for CAR-T therapy, Chinese hospitals can often begin treatment within 2-4 weeks of referral.

The Treatment Process

Step 1: Initial Assessment (1-2 weeks before travel)

Your medical team reviews your diagnosis, pathology reports, and imaging scans remotely. They confirm eligibility for CAR-T therapy and recommend a specific treatment protocol.

Step 2: Arrival and Pre-Treatment (Days 1-3)

Upon arrival in China, you undergo comprehensive blood tests, cardiac evaluation, and baseline imaging. The medical team confirms the treatment plan.

Step 3: Leukapheresis (Day 4-5)

T-cells are collected from your blood through a process called leukapheresis. This takes 3-4 hours and is similar to donating blood.

Step 4: CAR-T Manufacturing (2-3 weeks)

Your T-cells are sent to a specialized laboratory where they are genetically modified. During this period, patients can rest or explore the city while remaining in regular contact with their medical team.

Step 5: Lymphodepletion Chemotherapy (Days 25-28)

Before CAR-T infusion, a short course of chemotherapy is given to prepare your immune system for the modified cells.

Step 6: CAR-T Infusion (Day 30)

The modified CAR-T cells are infused back into your body. The infusion itself takes about 30 minutes.

Step 7: Monitoring (2-4 weeks after infusion)

Close monitoring for potential side effects, particularly Cytokine Release Syndrome (CRS) and neurotoxicity. Most patients remain hospitalized for 10-14 days post-infusion.
